As the stress and uncertainty of the AI era intensify, a growing number of corporate leaders are turning to a distinctly human solution: the chief of staff. Job postings for the role more than doubled last year according to Revelio Labs, with salaries reaching up to $400,000. The number of professionals holding the title in North America has more than tripled since 2021, with particularly strong growth in the technology and financial services sectors.

The modern chief of staff serves as part confidante, part concierge, and part consigliere, with responsibilities that range from administrative tasks to high-level strategic and operational duties. They amplify the CEO's vision, spearhead strategic projects, and challenge boardroom groupthink. Personal chemistry with the leader is essential, and the role demands enormous sacrifice—the median tenure is just 2.3 years, with salaries typically capping between $250,000 and $300,000.

While cost-cutting efforts and AI adoption could threaten some chief of staff functions, core skills such as judgement, communication, and the ability to influence others remain difficult to automate. The role continues to serve as a powerful career springboard: two-thirds of chiefs of staff are promoted after their tenure, according to McKinsey research. Sheryl Sandberg's trajectory—from chief of staff to US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers to COO of Facebook—remains the most prominent example of the role's career-accelerating potential.
