To solve the mystery of cosmic accelerated expansion and dark energy, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) in Arizona's Sonoran Desert has spent five years mapping the cosmos, producing the largest 3D universe map to date. Covering roughly 75 percent of the sky, the survey captures 5.6 trillion pixels across approximately 4 billion celestial objects in visible and near-infrared light, and the newly released DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys viewer now allows the public to explore this vast cosmic data online.

By aiming its 5,000 mechanical eyes out of the top and bottom of the Milky Way, DESI avoids obscuring galactic dust to record exceptionally clear views of distant space, drawing on foundational work by over 160 researchers and contributing to more than 1,800 scientific papers. The project has mapped cosmic history across 11 billion years, and data from its first three years suggest that dark energy might not be constant, but could instead be gradually weakening over time.

A comprehensive analysis of the full five-year dataset is scheduled for release in 2027, promising a more vivid reconstruction of the universe's past and present while serving as a vital baseline for future initiatives like NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Researchers also plan to train artificial intelligence models to expedite the processing of petabyte-scale astronomical data, unlocking new discoveries about cosmic expansion and galaxy evolution.
