Australia's data-center boom could drive up to A$225 billion in total expenditure, according to Pat Bustamante, a senior economist at Westpac Banking Corp. The pipeline of data center projects is valued at approximately A$175 billion, with around A$110 billion expected to be deployed within the next three years. Moreover, to avoid shifting costs onto existing electricity consumers, operators must secure their own energy supplies and support grid infrastructure, which could contribute up to an additional A$50 billion in investment. The construction boom has emerged as a significant economic catalyst, highlighted by Blackstone-owned operator AirTrunk's plan to invest A$75 billion over coming decades for cloud and AI workloads in Australia. This surge stimulates domestic activities in construction, engineering, and power infrastructure, alongside rising imports of servers and chips. Bustamante drew parallels to the 2010s liquefied natural gas (LNG) boom, noting comparable scale and reliance on foreign capital and imported hardware, though data centers generate broader domestic economic engagement.

Nonetheless, the massive capital influx poses immediate macroeconomic challenges by exacerbating existing capacity constraints and fueling inflationary pressures. Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter noted that while surging business investment bodes well for medium-to-long-term productivity, executing these projects creates near-term challenges. Consequently, Westpac cited the aggressive data center spending as a key factor likely compelling the central bank to implement another interest rate hike in November to tame inflation.
