Ro Khanna, the top Democrat on the House China committee, has accused the Trump administration of interfering with Chips and Science Act funding promised to major memory chipmakers like Samsung and SK Hynix. Khanna warned that this interference undermines efforts to reshore chip manufacturing to the US and has directly contributed to the recent surge in consumer electronics prices.
Driven by skyrocketing demand and rising memory chip costs fueled by the AI boom, major US tech companies like Apple are actively considering sourcing chips from China's CXMT. However, CXMT has been blacklisted by the Pentagon over alleged ties to the Chinese military, raising significant national security concerns and alarming lawmakers from both parties.
Although industry giants like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are planning massive capacity expansions in the US and South Korea, uncertainty surrounding government grants under the new administration threatens these efforts. Khanna emphasized that failing to meet domestic demand could force US manufacturers into a dangerous reliance on Chinese supply chains, which is firmly against the nation's strategic interests.
