Despite the rise of AI-powered digital fraud, archaic tactics like fake mail-delivered credit cards and skimmers continue to inflict massive financial harm globally. Recently across Europe, criminals have mailed bogus replacement cards claiming existing cards are expiring, tricking victims into scanning QR codes to activate them, which redirects them to phishing portals that steal banking credentials.

Physical mail scams are accompanied by a resurgence in magnetic stripe card skimming, particularly targeting vulnerable welfare programs. The US Department of Justice recently charged individuals for skimming SNAP benefits, which in many states still rely on legacy mag-stripe EBT cards lacking chip protection, allowing fraudsters to easily clone cards and drain current and future government assistance.

Although payment networks plan to phase out magnetic stripes over the coming years, risks remain high at non-bank ATMs and independent terminals where readers may be tampered with to force mag-stripe transactions. Consumers are advised to avoid swiping whenever possible, inspect card terminals for signs of tampering, and scrutinize unexpected postal mail with the same vigilance applied to digital phishing.
