GIC, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, has placed artificial intelligence at the center of its investment strategy, committing billions of dollars to the sector in recent years. Its landmark move was leading a $30 billion funding round for Anthropic in February, positioning itself for substantial gains should the Claude-maker proceed with a public listing this year. GIC's Chief Investment Officer Bryan Yeo acknowledged the rapid rise of Chinese open-weight AI models from labs such as Moonshot and DeepSeek, noting they are narrowing the gap with US rivals. He viewed this development as a net positive for the global AI ecosystem, arguing that lower costs would accelerate broader adoption of AI across companies and industries, driving exponential growth in use cases.
GIC's latest annual report revealed an inflation-adjusted return of 3.4% over the past two decades—the lowest since 2020—and the fund also changed its performance reporting methodology this year. The fund plans to deploy $30 billion into hedge funds over the next three years, while its portfolio allocation has shifted significantly toward the Americas, rising from 44% to 53% since 2024, as its Asia-Pacific exposure declined from 28% to 22%.
