Ahead of its highly anticipated initial public offering, AI company Anthropic reported third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion, representing less than a 50% increase from the June quarter and a notable deceleration from triple-digit growth earlier in the year. According to SemiAnalysis estimates, its annualized revenue is projected to reach roughly $74 billion, just slightly above the $65 billion recorded at the end of July. This sharp revenue slowdown deepened the global chip rout and rattled Asian markets, sending South Korea's Kospi down by as much as 9.3% and Japan's Nikkei 225 down by as much as 5.4%.

Anthropic's deceleration is directly altering the economics of Wall Street's historic AI funding cycle. Only days prior, bankers were syndicating $60 billion in new AI chip financing for Anthropic and seeking another $50 billion for its chief rival, OpenAI, while markets valued Anthropic's upcoming early-November IPO at up to $2 trillion. However, a recent survey of nearly 400 businesses revealed that due to routine AI sticker shock, one in four organizations delayed or cancelled their AI initiatives, demonstrating that enterprise demand is much more price-elastic than Wall Street assumed.

Furthermore, the broader AI sector is confronting multiple headwinds, including a memory chip technology breakthrough by China's CXMT Corp. that threatens the oligopoly of Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology, alongside tightening credit markets for junk-rated neocloud providers where pioneer CoreWeave Inc. saw bond yields surge to 15%. While prototype mass production and credit conditions may fluctuate, Anthropic's sharp slowdown—driven by cooling enterprise demand and an escalating price war with OpenAI—forces investors to question whether $1 trillion in AI infrastructure spending is justified, providing quantifiable support for skeptics like Ray Dalio who warned the AI boom was nearing a breaking point.
