SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's first AI satellites, powered by Nvidia chips, will launch in the fourth quarter of next year and reach significant scale by 2028. These space-based data centers are designed to be significantly simpler, lower in cost, and lighter than traditional server racks.
The company has filed an application with the FCC to launch a network of up to one million satellites dedicated to complex artificial intelligence computing in orbit. This orbital data center initiative was a central pillar of SpaceX's blockbuster IPO in June, pitched as a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to terrestrial facilities.
SpaceX will exclusively utilize Nvidia's technology for its orbital AI infrastructure, deciding against other chip designs that were initially considered. Nvidia also announced that SpaceX will use its Vera CPU to accelerate the computing power for Grok and its next generation of AI agents.
