Amazon reported accelerating cloud-computing revenue in Q2, with AWS sales jumping 37% to $42.2 billion, marking the fastest growth since Q4 2021 and the fifth consecutive period of rising sales, beating analysts' average forecast of $40.6 billion. The strong results sent Amazon shares surging 15% to $271.58, the biggest single-day gain since April 2012, alleviating investor concerns about the return on massive AI-related expenditures.
The company raised its 2026 capital expenditure projection to $220 billion from a previous estimate of $200 billion, with CEO Andy Jassy stating that most spending would go toward AI. Amazon spent over $53 billion on property and equipment in the quarter, pushing trailing twelve-month free cash flow negative at $7.6 billion. However, Jassy noted that investments would moderate over time as current data center builds will last 30 years, while internal equipment updates will only be needed every five to six years.
Amazon's total Q2 revenue grew 20% to $200.6 billion, surpassing the analyst consensus of $197 billion. Both the AI and chips businesses reached new milestones of $25 billion annual run rates with triple-digit year-over-year growth. Online sales rose 15% to $70.4 billion, and the company reported receiving $600 million in tariff refunds during the quarter, with CFO Brian Olsavsky indicating some funds would be returned to consumers.
