Recent research indicates that rising sea levels and changing rainfall patterns driven by global heating, alongside hardened coastal developments, are severely threatening some of the world's greatest surf breaks. Analysis of famous waves in World Surfing Reserves (WSR) revealed that more than three-quarters are at high risk due to shifting tides, relocating sands, and coastal construction, including iconic spots in Croyde Beach in the UK, Noosa in Australia, El Salvador, and Santa Cruz in California.

The creation of prime surfing waves relies on an intricate and highly sensitive balance of seafloor shape, swell direction, and tide. Published in the journal Climatic Change, the study involved nearly 200 local experts analyzing 57 surf breaks across eight countries, finding that natural coastlines adapt better to the climate crisis by shifting inland and redistributing sediments, whereas artificial structures like sea walls, jetties, and groynes reduce the resilience of beaches and waves.

The loss of surf breaks impacts not only surfers but also the local communities that depend on the multibillion-dollar surf economy. In places like North Devon in the UK, surfers visit year-round, sustaining local pubs, restaurants, and car parks even during winter months when other tourist destinations struggle. Researchers emphasize that changing waves serve as an early warning sign for broader beach changes and suggest tapping into the local knowledge of surfers to help protect these coastal environments.
