A powerful system of thunderstorms and strong winds is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Lala by Thursday and approach Hawaii this weekend. The US National Hurricane Center stated that the storm is forecast to remain below hurricane strength as it nears the islands early Saturday. A hurricane or tropical storm watch will likely be issued by early Thursday, and regions involved should closely monitor its progress.

Meteorologists note that as a powerful El Niño builds across the Pacific Ocean, the frequency and threat of central Pacific hurricanes are expected to increase this year. While tropical storms have frequently threatened Hawaii in recent years, if this system reaches wind speeds of at least 74 mph, it will be the first hurricane to directly hit the state in 34 years. The last hurricane to strike Hawaii was Iniki in 1992.

Even storms that do not make a direct landfall can cause severe devastation in Hawaii. For instance, Hurricane Dora in 2023 passed far to the south but fueled high winds that led to deadly wildfires and casualties on Maui. Additionally, Hawaii has already faced severe flash flooding from several Kona storms earlier this year, highlighting the region's vulnerability to extreme weather events.
