September offers several noteworthy celestial events for stargazers, beginning with Venus appearing close to Spica, the brightest star in the Virgo constellation, on September 1 and 2, which allows observers to easily contrast the bright steady glow of Venus against the fainter bluish star. Shortly after, on September 3, the moon will pass within roughly 1.1 degrees of the Pleiades star cluster in Taurus, presenting a diamond-like cluster of young stars next to the moon that can be enjoyed with the naked eye or binoculars, a pairing that will repeat on September 30.
The month also features meteor activity and planetary brightness, highlighted by the Epsilon Perseids meteor shower peaking on September 9 and 10 with up to eight meteors per hour, benefiting from skies darkened by an impending new moon. Later, on September 22, Venus will reach its brightest point of the year at an impressive magnitude of around -4.8 in the western evening sky, followed by the September equinox on September 23 marking the seasonal transition into astronomical autumn for the northern hemisphere and spring for the southern hemisphere.
Late September concludes with observations of the solar system's distant frontier and a celebrated full moon. On September 26, Neptune reaches opposition with Earth positioned directly between it and the Sun, making it visible for much of the night and offering the year's best opportunity to view its tiny bluish disk in Pisces using a telescope; simultaneously, that evening features the Harvest Moon, the traditional name given to the full moon occurring closest to the autumn equinox.
