Artificial intelligence (AI) notetaking tools are now ubiquitous in video meetings, serving as virtual attendees that transcribe and summarize discussions. However, companies and executives in sensitive sectors are struggling to manage these uninvited bots. Some meeting hosts are actively removing them, while others advise participants to be cautious of their phrasing. This caution arises because AI notetakers typically capture words verbatim without interpreting crucial non-verbal cues such as body language, vocal tone, or other context.
Legally, several US states and European jurisdictions mandate consent from all participants before any recording can occur. However, because authorities rely on reported violations, actual enforcement is weak, turning privacy compliance into an honors system based on courtesy. Despite these legal hurdles, the public's trust in AI varies, with many individuals routinely sharing intimate personal details and seeking advice from conversational chatbots, signaling a significant cultural shift in technology adoption.
Capitalizing on this cultural shift, AI hardware companies are experiencing rapid growth. The wearable startup Plaud projects its sales to more than double, reaching $500 million (approximately 500 million USD) this year as it prepares to launch a new "always ready" recording pendant. Co-founder and CEO Nathan Xu emphasizes that their conspicuous, visible design is intentional, aiming to satisfy legal compliance while helping users feel confident and ensuring surrounding individuals feel psychologically secure.
