Amid the wave of mega-IPOs catalyzed by the artificial intelligence boom, the venture capital sector's traditional 'feast-or-famine' dynamic has been stretched to an extreme. Anthropic is targeting an IPO valuation of $2 trillion, which alongside SpaceX's $2 trillion valuation and OpenAI's expected $1.2 trillion mark, pushes their combined worth beyond $5 trillion—surpassing the aggregate $4.1 trillion initial trading value of all 3,365 tech IPOs from 1980 to 2025.

Despite these staggering headline numbers, the broader VC industry is grappling with severe illiquidity and portfolio indigestion following the 2021 interest rate hikes. With approximately $5.3 trillion tied up in private unicorns that are reluctant to go public at reduced valuations, institutional investors have seen distributions stall, constraining new capital deployment and concentrating nearly a third of all new funding into a handful of mega-firms such as Andreessen Horowitz.

While industry leaders argue that AI mega-exits will shift capital allocations away from private equity buyouts and back to venture, current windfalls remain heavily concentrated among core chipmakers, foundation model creators, and cloud providers. The long-term vitality of the ecosystem hinges on whether these immense gains can eventually broaden out to the wider network of startups developing practical downstream AI applications.
