Weighted blankets, originally inspired by padded squeeze chutes used to soothe livestock, have gained immense commercial traction despite price points reaching hundreds of dollars. Recent clinical trials have sought to establish their physiological efficacy through controlled empirical testing. In a 2023 Swedish crossover study involving 26 healthy young adults, participants slept alternately under a standard blanket and one calibrated to approximately 12% of their body weight. Saliva samples collected hourly prior to bedtime demonstrated that the weighted blanket induced a 32% greater average surge in melatonin, the primary sleep-promoting hormone, though objective total sleep duration remained completely unchanged across the single-night observation window.

To evaluate sustained therapeutic outcomes, a 2024 trial published in BMC Psychiatry monitored 95 clinically diagnosed adult insomniacs in China over a four-week period, randomly assigning them either 5.5kg or 3.5kg blankets. Electronic actigraphy tracking awakenings during the initial week revealed modest reductions in nighttime disruptions among the heavier blanket group. By week four, while formal insomnia severity scores showed statistically indistinguishable improvements between both cohorts, secondary subjective metrics diverged sharply: patients using the 5.5kg blanket reported roughly double the improvement in perceived sleep quality alongside significantly greater reductions in fatigue, anxiety, physiological stress, and chronic pain.

The most dramatic therapeutic divergence emerged in a 2020 randomized trial published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, which evaluated 119 Swedish adults suffering from insomnia alongside comorbid psychiatric conditions over four weeks. Nearly 60% of participants utilizing 6kg or 8kg metal-chain weighted blankets achieved a 50% or greater reduction in their insomnia severity index, compared to a mere 5% in the 1.5kg plastic-chain control cohort. While objective trials—including a 2014 crossover study of 67 autistic children and a 2022 evaluation of 94 chronic pain patients—failed to demonstrate significant changes in sleep onset latency or numeric pain intensity ratings, subjective patient preferences and perceived alleviation of daily dysfunction remained overwhelmingly positive across all demographics.
