Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has agreed to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence startup founded by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at $8.2 billion, which is expected to close by the end of the year subject to regulatory approvals. The acquisition aims to bring top-tier researchers and models into AMD to guide future hardware development and strengthen its end-to-end system capabilities in the race against Nvidia.
World Labs specializes in creating 'world models' that generate and reconstruct 3D environments for real-world applications such as robotics, scientific discovery, and factory equipment. Under the terms of the agreement, Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as an executive vice president and chief scientist reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su, helping accelerate the development flywheel between AI software and hardware compute.
To better serve data center clients, AMD plans to expand its portfolio of both open and proprietary AI models alongside its core accelerators to offer complete turnkey solutions. As the chipmaker approaches a $1 trillion valuation amidst soaring AI spending, this strategic expansion positions AMD to intensify competition against market leader Nvidia and define the future landscape of AI computing.
