Last year the average Briton ate 209 eggs, 45 more than in 2005, with demand boosted by lockdown baking and brunch trends, while supply pressure worsened after bird-flu culls cut England’s laying flock by 10% since 2021 and war-linked feed and electricity costs pushed egg prices up 36% in real terms.

To fill the gap, Britain doubled egg imports since 2021, and imported eggs now make up about one in nine eggs on shelves compared with about one in 30 in 2022, with most of those eggs coming from Ukraine last year. After Russia’s invasion, the UK and EU temporarily removed tariffs and quotas on Ukrainian farm goods, the EU reimposed barriers last year, and Britain is the only one keeping egg trade tariff-free until 2028, with a record 200 million Ukrainian eggs arriving last year.

British farmers say many imported eggs are Class B and are diverted to biscuits, sauces, and restaurants, pressuring domestic prices. Ukraine’s two largest producers use battery cages banned in Britain since 2012, and a YouGov poll found seven in ten Britons would avoid places serving battery-cage eggs; however no such law exists for restaurants and consumers cannot identify egg origin. Agricultural goods made up over half of Ukraine’s exports in 2025, making UK demand important to Kyiv’s recovery plan.
