Britain’s nuclear deterrent relies on four Vanguard-class submarines, soon to be replaced by Dreadnought-class boats, and the Trident D5 missiles can be fired without U.S. launch authority or GPS. But this operational independence sits on decades of deep Anglo-U.S. integration: the 1958 Mutual Defence Agreement and 1963 Polaris Sales Agreement are unique legal structures that permit sensitive U.S. technology transfer despite U.S. restrictions.

Warhead work is nominally done at Aldermaston, yet Britain’s Holbrook and Astraea programs are closely tied to U.S. designs (W76 and W93 lines), and experts say the UK has never independently designed a modern thermonuclear weapon. Between 2020 and 2023, 955 non-nuclear weapon parts were reported to have been sent from the U.S., while Britain also depends on U.S. interstage transport media, tritium, and U.S. test and missile infrastructure, including Georgia’s Kings Bay.

If U.S. cooperation ended, Britain could likely sustain only one Trident load at sea plus one in handoff position, giving a limited runway, while rebuilding the full production and support chain is estimated to exceed £100bn. A fallback to nuclear-armed cruise missiles (abandoned in the 1990s) remains slower in planning terms—17 years for a new Trident warhead and 24 years for a cruise-missile warhead in a 2013 review—and testing constraints remain decisive; France’s 1990 offer to share an air-launched warhead design was considered but not adopted.
