US legal filings show a judge authorized the seizure of nine Starlink terminals and two accounts, noting at least 26 dishes on buildings at the Three Pagodas Pass scam center, while a second filing identified at least 79 dishes at the Tai Chang compound. The DOJ says Southeast Asian scam centers have stolen billions and are linked to Chinese organized crime. The new “Scam Center Strike Force” has already seized roughly $400 million in cryptocurrency. SpaceX stated in late October it had proactively disabled more than 2,500 Starlink units operating near Myanmar scam hubs.
Records tie Starlink to the “Wealthob” investment fraud, with around 22 victims reporting losses of about $6.7 million between 2017 and November 2025. Scammers initiated contact via “misdial” texts, shifted conversations to WhatsApp or Telegram, and pushed fraudulent crypto schemes. SpaceX and Meta data linked scammers’ phone numbers to nine Starlink devices and two accounts registered in the Philippines. Filings order SpaceX to freeze or disconnect the terminals.
Researchers say scam compounds in Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia operate with forced labor and have grown into a billion-dollar industry. WIRED found hundreds of phones at border compounds connecting to Starlink more than 40,000 times from November 2024 to February 2025. Despite raids and service cuts, many centers remain functional. Analysts report rising Starlink smuggling and increased use of generative AI and deepfakes to accelerate fraud.
