US business activity expanded at its fastest pace in five months in June, driven by a surge in manufacturing demand. The S&P Global flash composite purchasing managers index rose to 52.2, while the manufacturing gauge climbed to 55.7—its highest level since May 2022—as factories ramped up production to meet the strongest new orders growth in over four years.

Despite the overall improvement, the service sector continued to grow at a subdued pace, weighed down by high prices and weak consumer confidence, though the World Cup provided a partial boost. Input costs rose at a slightly slower rate, but widening supply chain delays prompted manufacturers to aggressively stockpile materials, with input inventories swelling at the second-fastest pace on record. To cut costs elsewhere, both factories and service providers reduced headcount in June, with manufacturing employment falling to its lowest since May 2020.

Looking ahead, both manufacturers and service providers expressed greater optimism about future prospects, likely buoyed by hopes that war-driven cost pressures will ease in the coming months. During the survey period of June 11–22, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding, helping to pave the way toward a permanent peace deal and restoring some business confidence.
