A synthetic-resin skating rink opened in late November at Fukutoku no mori in Tokyo’s Nihonbashi and will run until mid-January. Adult admission is 1,800 yen (about $11.50) including skate rental, and the resin surface avoids the cold and wet falls associated with ice.
Costs drive adoption. A Tokyo operator says installation for synthetic rinks is roughly one-quarter the cost of ice rinks (size-dependent), while maintenance is cheaper because there is no refrigeration system and no routine ice resurfacing. Nikkei research also indicates adult fees (often including rental) are typically under 2,000 yen, reflecting the lower operating burden.
Setup time is markedly shorter: panels about 2 m by 1 m are fastened together, allowing event-site installation in as little as three days including ground prep, versus about a fortnight for ice (roughly one week of preparation plus one week to freeze). Performance has improved by using lower-friction resins and embedding lubricants in the material; J-Planning began selling Swiss-made surfaces in 2017. The UHMWPE resin is also seeing rising demand elsewhere (e.g., lithium-ion battery separators), prompting Asahi Kasei to keep expanding production since 2016.
