US regulators have banned a wide range of Chinese-made robots from being imported into the country on national security grounds, creating an opportunity for Ati Robotics. Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Bangalore, the company assembles its robots in India and claims to use fewer Chinese parts than nearly any other robotics firm in the US. While record investment has flowed into robotics startups this year, many still depend heavily on Chinese hardware suppliers, and the FCC's new ban on Chinese humanoids and advanced devices could hinder smaller US robotics companies.
Ati originally developed motors for self-driving cars before pivoting to build its own warehouse robots, including heavy-duty tuggers and pallet movers. By locating R&D in Bangalore, the company leveraged India's booming electric vehicle supply chain, adapting reliable, cost-efficient automotive components for robotics use. The company now has several hundred robots operating across more than 50 customer sites, and its first humanoid robot, designed to move heavy bins, is set to enter service later this year.
On the supply chain front, Ati's 10,000-pound tugger is essentially China-free, while its pallet mover contains less than five percent Chinese parts. The company deliberately chose induction motors over Chinese-made brushless motors, trading slight efficiency losses for supply chain independence. Chandra believes the ban will push more companies to manufacture locally and will benefit firms producing robots outside China, including Tesla's Optimus and Figure. Ati is also establishing an assembly facility near Detroit, Michigan, to eventually build its robots on American soil.
