The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has discovered hundreds of mysterious objects known as "little red dots" in the early universe, which are likely massive black holes enshrouded in thick gas. Scientists are astounded by these black holes that grew to astonishing masses shortly after the Big Bang, as their existence challenges established astrophysical theories. Current hypotheses suggest that these supermassive black holes might have grown through exceptional accretion processes or formed from the direct collapse of colossal gas clouds, rather than evolving from standard stars.
In addition to black holes, JWST has observed unexpectedly bright galaxies in the early universe, prompting researchers to reassess the mechanisms of galaxy formation. The early universe was small and dense, with dark matter drawing gas into filaments to ignite the first stars, yet these resulting galaxies are much brighter than anticipated. By comparing observational data with advanced computer simulations, scientists propose that these early galaxies might have converted gas into stars much more efficiently, or experienced violent, bursty periods of star formation.
The radiation from these early galaxies and black holes eventually ionized the neutral hydrogen gas in the universe, ending the cosmic dark ages and ushering in the period known as cosmic dawn. When the massive stars born in this era burned through their fuel, they exploded in supernovas, scattering heavy elements essential for life, such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, across the vastness of space. Although unraveling these mysteries of cosmic origins will take time, scientists are immensely thrilled to piece together the complete picture of our existence through observations and simulations.
