Ahead of Israel’s general election on October 27th, violent land incursions by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank have intensified sharply. According to Israel’s internal security agency Shin Bet, 660 "nationalistic" settler attacks occurred in the first half of 2026, surging from 405 during the same period last year. Since the outbreak of war following October 7th 2023, over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in clashes involving Israeli settlers and the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), as radical groups deliberately provoke confrontations to expel rural communities and expand illegal outposts.
Recent events demonstrate the systematic impunity and military deference enjoyed by settlers. On August 9th, settlers from the newly erected Tel Talpiot outpost besieged Palestinian homes in the village of Qusra, where initial IDF troops prayed alongside the agitators rather than dispersing them before military brass belatedly declared a "closed military zone" that effectively trapped residents indoors. This followed a July 24th clash in the village of Tel that left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead, triggering extensive IDF lockdowns across major Palestinian urban centers, including Nablus.
Political arrangements under Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu have further entrenched this lawlessness. Defence Minister Israel Katz recently shifted the jurisdiction of settler law enforcement from the IDF to the national police, which operates under far-right, settler-aligned National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Reliant on far-right factions to retain power post-election, Netanyahu has refused to rein in settler aggression. Security officials warn that extremist settlers are deliberately attempting to incite a full-scale Palestinian uprising (intifada) to justify sweeping military occupations across West Bank cities.
