Tongyeong, a port city in South Gyeongsang, is both a seaside getaway and a sailing base for Hallyeohaesang National Park. Established in 1968, the park spans about 536 square kilometers, with 76% open water. Off Tongyeong lie roughly 40 inhabited and 110 uninhabited islands. Public ferries reach many ports, but private sailboats can follow wind and tuck into coves and protected harbors that scheduled routes never touch, highlighting how Korea’s south coast blends eastern rockiness with western tidal flats.
Many owners source boats from Japan’s larger secondhand market. American sailor Ryan Taylor moved to Korea in March 2020 and bought a boat in Nagasaki prefecture in 2022, refit it, used a broker to navigate import limits, then sailed 26 hours from Sasebo to Tongyeong across the Tsushima Strait, facing 3-meter waves early on. Japan’s glut traces to the 1980s and early-1990s bubble: by 2010 up to 100,000 boats were abandoned, worsened after the 2011 disaster, and about 56,000 still remained in 2022.
Under sail, the red tape fades into island-hopping: from Haglim to Yokji, past smaller islets, then back toward Tongyeong via Nodae and Chudo to the Saryang group. Yokji’s monorail is closed after an accident, so visitors rent scooters or ATVs to reach lookouts and local food stops. On Saryang, hikers tackle a ridge trail that crosses six peaks, often starting with 368-meter Jirisan and finishing after descending 263-meter Oknyeobong, with suspension bridges delivering wide bay views before the final mooring in Tongyeong.
