The Enhanced Games opens on May 24th and permits athletes to use all sorts of substances, provided they are licensed and administered under a doctor’s supervision; this is the opposite of the usual sporting ban on performance-enhancing drugs. Canadian two-time World’s Strongest Man Mitchell Hooper has disclosed his “stack,” which includes Adderall and several anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS).

AAS are among the most potent drugs for boosting strength and power, and a 2014 meta-analysis estimated that 6% of men have used them at least once. In a 1996 study, young men given higher doses of testosterone and no exercise improved lower-body strength by 19% after 10 weeks; a placebo group lifting three times a week improved by about the same amount, while those combining steroids with training gained 38%.

Steroids also increase red blood cells that carry oxygen and may aid endurance sports, but they come with risks: heart disease, suppression of natural hormone production, infertility, testicular shrinkage, faster hair loss, and in some men, breast development. In women, they can enlarge the clitoris, increase body hair and beards, and deepen the voice, while some East German athletes suffered lifelong health complications from state-sponsored doping.
