In the 1976 “Judgment of Paris” blind tasting, Napa Valley red and white wines beat celebrated Bordeaux and Burgundy bottles, and U.S. wine exports more than quintupled between 1975 and 1980. The 1971 World Atlas of Wine devoted 73 pages to France and only 8 to California, yet 50 years later the result had reshaped the wine world.

The 50th-anniversary picture highlights the contrast between price and prestige: the 1973 Stag’s Leap and Montelena bottles sold for $6 and $6.50, respectively, but can now fetch thousands of dollars apiece. At the same time, both French and American wine regions face weakening demand, while France and the EU have pledged about €250 million to uproot vines, signaling that supply now exceeds demand.

Bordeaux, Napa, and Burgundy are diverging: Burgundy is about one-third the size of Bordeaux yet now accounts for roughly 23% of Liv-ex sales, more than triple its share a decade ago. Bordeaux and Napa are described as being in an “economic crisis” and at a turning point, with Bordeaux hurt by past overproduction, falling Chinese demand, and the en primeur system, and Napa hit by aging consumers and a nearly 80% drop in Canadian sales in 2025.
