French startup Tissium has developed a biopolymer liquid made from fatty acid and glycerol that adheres to tissue when exposed to light, serving as a splint to hold severed peripheral nerves in place during self-repair before biodegrading. In a US clinical trial involving 12 patients with finger nerve injuries, all participants regained sensation—including temperature, pain, texture, and light touch—with no pain or device-related complications reported after one year, outperforming the roughly 80 percent success rate of conventional micro-suture techniques.

The company has secured €30 million in private venture capital investment and an additional €30 million in debt financing from the European Investment Bank to scale commercialization. Its product received FDA marketing approval last year and is already available for purchase by surgeons in the United States, with manufacturing continuing at its facility in northern France. Beyond nerve repair, Tissium is expanding into hernia treatment, planning to enroll approximately 200 patients in a US trial where its biopolymer would improve surgical consistency and patient recovery outcomes.
