Across the United States, roughly 90,000 reservoirs are facing a severe sediment buildup crisis that poses a major hidden vulnerability to the water supply. In Denver, the vital Strontia Springs Reservoir has already lost nearly one-fifth of its storage capacity due to post-wildfire erosion and storms. With American dams averaging over six decades in age, per capita water storage capacity has plummeted by up to 44% since its 1970s peak. Even moderate sediment accumulation can severely undermine water infrastructure, as relatively low fill levels can choke off bottom-level intakes, disable hydroelectric turbines, and disrupt agricultural supplies, imposing massive financial losses and driving food inflation.

Removing accumulated silt remains an exceptionally difficult and expensive challenge for water utilities. Flushing sediment requires releasing water that drought-stricken regions cannot spare, while mechanical dredging runs into immense equipment costs and environmental hurdles regarding toxic waste disposal. Although experts and federal agencies are pushing for comprehensive monitoring and long-term exit strategies, accelerating climate impacts threaten to decommission vital dams ahead of schedule.
