Google plans to launch its first Gemini-powered AI glasses in 2026, splitting the lineup into two categories: screen-equipped AR models and audio-focused versions. The company is partnering with Samsung, Warby Parker, Gentle Monster and Xreal, aiming to compete with Meta’s popular Ray-Ban and Oakley glasses and upcoming products from Snap and Apple, all targeting similar 2026 timelines. Unlike the ill-fated Google Glass from a decade ago, the new effort is built on the Android XR platform and emphasizes mainstream design, battery life and privacy.
In hands-on demos, Google showed prototypes that connect wirelessly to a smartphone, which handles most processing so the glasses can stay slim and lightweight. Two display types were tested: a monocular design with a single right-lens screen, and a binocular design with dual displays that provide a larger virtual image. Features included real-time translation with optional on-screen captions, AR overlays for Google Maps and Meet, and the ability to view AI-enhanced photo results directly in the lenses.
Google also detailed upgrades for the $1,800 Galaxy XR headset, including a new travel mode that stabilizes virtual windows in moving cars and planes. A beta PC Connect app now lets any Windows computer mirror its screen into XR for work or gaming, with a macOS version in development, removing the earlier requirement for Samsung Galaxy Book laptops. A more realistic "Likeness" avatar system, driven by smartphone facial scans and tracking hand and face movements, launches in beta this week, while Xreal’s Project Aura glasses promise a 70-degree field of view in a slimmer Android XR form factor.
