Iran destroyed an AN/TPY-2 radar and support equipment at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, a system worth about $300 million that helps cue US THAAD missile defense batteries. Data cited from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies show two reported Iranian strikes in Jordan on February 28 and March 3, both initially said to have been intercepted; if this radar was in fact destroyed, it marks a high-value successful penetration and further weakens the Gulf’s capacity to handle follow-on ballistic missile and drone attacks.
The loss matters because THAAD is already scarce. The US has only eight THAAD systems worldwide, below the nine-battery requirement set in 2012; each battery costs about $1 billion, with the radar accounting for roughly $300 million, or about 30%. A THAAD battery includes 90 soldiers, six truck-mounted launchers, 48 interceptors, and one TPY-2 radar, which equals eight interceptors per launcher. Each interceptor made by Lockheed Martin costs about $13 million, underscoring the high replacement cost and time burden.
With the AN/TPY-2 out of action, more interception work will shift onto Patriot systems, but PAC-3 missiles are already in short supply, concentrating stress on shorter-range defenses. Earlier, a fixed AN/FPS-132 early-warning radar in Qatar was also damaged in an Iranian attack, showing that Gulf sensing and interception nodes are being steadily worn down. As Iranian retaliation using drones and ballistic missiles has at times strained or overwhelmed regional defenses, Washington moved by March 6 to press contractors including Lockheed and RTX to speed output, with some weapons targeted for a fourfold production increase.
