US tariffs have rapidly shifted video game console manufacturing away from China to Vietnam. China’s share of US console imports collapsed from 86% in 2024 to under 5% after May 2025, as average tariffs on Chinese consoles jumped to 88% before easing to about 30%, while Vietnamese units faced around 10% or less. Vietnam’s exports rose from under $30 million a month in 2024 to more than $400 million a month, within a $20 billion annual global console trade.

Three manufacturers anchor this shift: Hosiden, Goertek and Pegatron, which together shipped over $2 billion of consoles from Vietnam to the US between September 2024 and August 2025. Hosiden is adding a 258,000 square foot building, Goertek is ramping output at a 127 acre complex targeting 2 million consoles and 5 million controllers, and Pegatron is quadrupling its workforce while leasing about 312,000 square feet of extra warehousing to expand PlayStation and Xbox assembly.

Consumers still find shelves stocked, led by Nintendo’s Switch 2, which launched in June at $450 and is aiming for 25 million global sales by March 2026, while PlayStation 5 ranks second in US hardware sales. The US government collected at least $325 million in tariffs on consoles and related goods between February and August, and China diverted lost US sales by redirecting about $1.4 billion in exports, including roughly $1.1 billion toward the European Union and $180 million a month to Europe overall.
