From January to October 2025, Japan received 35.5472 million visitors, up 18% year on year and close to the 2024 record of 36.87 million, with international guests staying longer and choosing higher priced room types, while business travel for international conferences remains strong. Although the Chinese government’s November warning against travel to Japan caused group tour cancellations, the impact on individual travelers is seen as limited, and overall demand is still supported by the weak yen and strong interest in Japanese culture.
Comparing November 2018 to October 2019 with November 2024 to October 2025, luxury and upper upscale hotel rates in dollar terms rose about 30%, upscale and upper midscale increased 20%, and midscale and economy segments rose only 5%. Urban areas like Tokyo and Kyoto now see months where international guests outnumber Japanese in overnight stays. With the government targeting 60 million inbound visitors by 2030, experts argue that lower priced hotels, which currently rely heavily on domestic guests, need medium to long term strategies to adapt to a more international customer base.
