The escalation of the Iran war has made the Strait of Hormuz a central strategic chokepoint. Under normal conditions the strait carries roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies, but more than two weeks after the conflict began Iran effectively shut the waterway. International oil prices consequently rose about 45% to around $106 per barrel. In an approximately eight-minute phone interview, US president Donald Trump warned that NATO faces a “very bad future” if allies fail to help reopen the route and urged multiple countries to join a coordinated effort to secure global energy transport.
Trump requested military assistance from European and other allies, including minesweepers and special forces to remove Iranian naval mines and drone threats along the strait. He also pressured China, noting that roughly 90% of its oil imports transit through the waterway, and said he might delay a planned summit with Chinese president Xi Jinping scheduled for later this month if Beijing does not help safeguard shipping. The United States claims to have severely degraded Iran’s military capacity during the first two weeks of the war, but security in the strait remains unresolved.
The conflict has already affected multiple international forces. A French soldier was killed in an Iranian drone strike in Iraq, and an Italian aircraft was destroyed at a base in Kuwait. Trump also threatened additional strikes on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub, saying US forces could target its oil infrastructure within about five minutes. The discussion also referenced roughly $350 billion in US aid previously provided to Ukraine, highlighting the close connections between geopolitical conflict, energy security, military alliances, and global economic stability.
