脑机介面新创 Science Corporation(2021 年由前 Neuralink 总裁 Max Hodak 创立)在 2025 年 12 月 17 日公布原型,成立新部门投入器官灌流保存。
Science Corporation, a brain-computer interface startup founded in 2021 by former Neuralink president Max Hodak, unveiled an organ-perfusion prototype on December 17, 2025. It is launching a new division to extend how long human organs can be sustained outside the body, aiming for smaller, more portable systems than today’s clunky, costly hospital-based perfusion and life-support setups used for transplants and for patients whose hearts or lungs fail.
Hodak cites a 17-year-old cystic fibrosis patient supported by ECMO while awaiting a transplant: after roughly two months on the waitlist, complications made him ineligible, the oxygenator began failing, and he died after it was not replaced. ECMO proved vital during Covid-19 but can cost thousands of dollars per day, demands intensive staffing, constant monitoring, and frequent manual adjustments, and is not available at every hospital.
Transplant perfusion is also expensive: TransMedics’ organ care system costs about $250,000 for the machine plus roughly $40,000–$80,000 per use, with long-distance transport sometimes handled by its private-jet fleet. Science says its scratch-built system has kept rabbit kidneys alive ex vivo for up to 48 hours and targets a month by next spring; human kidneys on ice last about 24–36 hours, while existing perfusion can extend viability to four days or more. With ~170 employees and about $290 million raised, Science emphasizes integrated real-time sensors (oxygenation, flow, pressure, temperature) and closed-loop automation to reduce manual control and drive costs down.
