Since ChatGPT’s 2022 debut, major Reddit communities have seen a sharp rise in AI-generated posts. r/AmItheAsshole, with more than 24 million members, has moderators estimating that as much as 50% of submissions may be partly or fully AI-written, while the platform removed over 40 million items of “spam and manipulated content” in the first half of 2025. Related subreddits such as r/AITAH (nearly 7 million members) report similar surges and treat AI as an existential threat. User experience has deteriorated as repetitive scenarios—wedding disputes or seating conflicts—signal AI templates, eroding trust and reducing engagement.

AI content is difficult to verify; five Redditors described relying on intuition and unstructured clues such as title-body repetition, abrupt grammar shifts, new accounts, or “uncanny” narrative cadence. With no reliable detection tools, accuracy remains effectively 0%, and an “AI linguistic feedback loop” has emerged as chatbots trained on Reddit influence human writing that then resembles AI. In news and political subs, AI automates disinformation and astroturfing, increasing moderator workload; a former r/Ukraine moderator (close to 1 million members) likened the effort to “one person standing against a tidal wave.”

Economic incentives also drive proliferation. Reddit’s Contributor Program allows monetization through karma and awards, prompting some users to mass-produce AI posts, sell high-karma accounts, or qualify for NSFW subs to promote paid content. Moderators observe widespread “gamification” in which accounts post strategically to farm karma. Overall, generating plausible AI text is low-cost while evaluating it is high-cost, creating structural asymmetry; AI posts now accelerate declines in community governance, user trust, and information authenticity.
