On Jan. 6, 2026, the U.S. Energy Department said it will award $2.7 billion to nuclear fuel makers—$900 million each to Centrus Energy and two others—to rebuild domestic enrichment and reduce reliance on Russian enriched uranium. Centrus shares rose as much as 9.2% in New York.
The task orders fund purchases of low-enriched uranium for today’s reactors and HALEU for a new wave of factory-built small modular reactors. Recipients include Maryland-based Centrus (next-generation fuel development), Thiel-backed enrichment startup General Matter, and an Orano subsidiary planning an enrichment facility in Tennessee.
The U.S. now has only one major commercial enrichment plant, in New Mexico, owned by Urenco. The money was appropriated by Congress in 2024 alongside a plan to end imports of Russian reactor fuel; the 2024 ban allows limited DOE waivers through 2028. DOE also awarded $28 million to Global Laser Enrichment to advance next-generation enrichment technology.
