The Chinese government has signaled it may permit companies like Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and ByteDance Ltd. to purchase Nvidia Corp.’s newly launched RTX Pro 5500 chips, according to people familiar with the matter reported by The Information. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently asked select firms to detail their procurement plans, including quantities and intended use cases, and has informed some that it plans to grant approvals.

While Washington continues to restrict Nvidia's most advanced accelerators to curb Chinese AI advancements and potential military applications, the RTX Pro 5500 is primarily engineered for graphics and simulations rather than top-tier computing. Unlike flagship accelerators such as the GB300 series, the RTX Pro 5500 is manufactured using older-generation processes to deliver scalable workstation compute while still providing ancillary support for AI workloads.

Facing a persistent shortage of high-performance hardware, Chinese AI developers continue to rely on a hybrid mix of domestic and foreign semiconductors to train frontier large language models. Although the US administration recently eased restrictions on certain Nvidia products, the permitted shipments remain largely confined to older-generation models sold in limited quantities.
