Australia will cut an EV-related fringe-benefits-tax concession. From April 2027 for two years, electric vehicles priced at A$75,000 (about US$54,000) or below will still receive the full rebate, while vehicles priced between that cap and the luxury car tax threshold will receive only a 25% discount. From 2029, the policy shifts to a flat 25% discount for all non-luxury vehicles, meaning a materially smaller incentive for many EV buyers.

The government presented this as a budget-management measure. In an official statement, Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the change allows Canberra to respond to immediate economic pressures while still supporting Australian families and meeting intergenerational responsibilities.

Recent developments suggest demand remains strong despite the policy squeeze. Australia cut fuel tax in April after war-driven gasoline price spikes, yet EV demand had already accelerated during the period of fuel uncertainty. Data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show EVs reached a record share in March at nearly 15% of new-car sales, up from 7.5% a year earlier, indicating faster uptake.
