Taiwan prosecutors suspect three people successfully diverted at least one shipment of Nvidia AI chips to China after first exporting it to Japan. The trio was detained last week for allegedly falsifying export documents tied to Super Micro Computer Inc. servers containing advanced Nvidia chips. Authorities seized about 50 servers, and the case is Taiwan’s first public crackdown on AI chip diversion, underscoring tighter enforcement after years of US pressure to curb China’s tech access.
According to people familiar with the matter, one shipment had already cleared Taiwan customs, went to Japan, and then on to Hong Kong, a common waypoint for hardware ultimately sent to mainland China. The amount of hardware Taiwan believes was successfully smuggled was not specified. Prosecutors also say the defendants planned to use Japan as an intermediary for the batch of servers seized last week. The probe may be the first known case targeting an AI-chip smuggling route through Japan, whereas other cases have focused on Southeast Asia.
Japanese customs and trade officials did not comment. Taiwan has not accused Nvidia or Super Micro of wrongdoing; Jensen Huang said Nvidia rigorously explains rules to partners and urged Super Micro to improve compliance. Super Micro said it cooperated with Taiwan authorities, leading to the arrests and seizure of servers that were deceptively acquired after being sold to an authorized reseller, and said its vetting exceeded government requirements. US prosecutors are now pursuing at least five criminal cases tied to semiconductor diversion. (Key numbers: 5)
