Young consumers in the UK and US are shifting discretionary spending from nightlife to fitness. A February Bank of America report says gym-related spending is rising among Gen Z and millennials as alcohol consumption keeps falling, while Mintel finds 30% of US Gen Z say they are spending more on gym memberships and classes than a year ago. Mintel strategist Claire Tassin says fitness has become a major social activity, not just a health habit.

Boutique gyms and premium clubs are now social hubs for younger users. Nicolette Brewer, 25, spends about $500 a month on fitness, including an Equinox membership of over $300, SoulCycle, Pilates-Barre classes, and race fees; she met her boyfriend at a run club and made friends through repeat classes. Olivia Antonelli, 26, says her friendships increasingly revolve around taking classes together, showing how Gen Z has turned wellness into part of identity.

The trend is backed by strong numbers: TikTok and Instagram have more than 3.4 million posts under #Pilates, and Mintel’s survey found 77% of US Gen Z are more focused on wellness than a year ago, 45% prioritize physical fitness, and 34% prioritize sleep. Prices are high: single boutique classes in the US start around $40, London high-end gym memberships can exceed £3,400 a year ($4,576), and elite programs such as Surrenne or Tramp Health can reach £15,000.
