Bloomberg reports that Elon Musk’s xAI is expanding its Memphis “Colossus” AI data-center complex and has bought a third nearby building, which Musk said would lift training compute to almost 2 gigawatts. The new site is in Southaven, Mississippi, adjoining the under-construction “Colossus 2,” according to The Information and property records.
Musk posted that the third building is called “MACROHARDRR” and framed scale in power terms: 1 gigawatt can supply electricity for roughly 750,000 US homes. Moving toward ~2GW implies a massive step-up in power draw and, by proxy, compute capacity, consistent with his stated ambition to build the world’s largest AI-training data center.
On the hardware and financing side, Musk has said Colossus 2 could eventually house 550,000 Nvidia chips, costing “tens of billions of dollars.” Bloomberg previously reported xAI was in talks to raise $20 billion in combined debt and equity in 2025, partly to purchase Nvidia processors. The company did not comment on The Information’s report.
