Nepal is demanding climate compensation from the world's major greenhouse gas emitters following devastating flash floods in the Bhotekoshi River basin triggered by a massive rock and ice collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border. With the official death toll surpassing 1,000 and nearly 4,000 people still missing alongside severe infrastructure destruction, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal stated that major polluters like China, the US, and India have left smaller nations to bear the cost, vowing to forcefully pursue the issue as a matter of international justice.
This push comes ahead of the United Nations' annual climate summit in November, where developing nations plan to pressure wealthy, high-emitting countries for greater funding to cover climate-induced loss and damage. The Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice, a coalition of 200 international groups, supported Nepal's position, asserting that the nation cannot protect the Himalayas through adaptation alone while fossil fuel emissions rise elsewhere, nor should it incur debt for a crisis it did not create.
Addressing the immediate disaster, Nepal has requested urgent relief from the UN's Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, noting in a letter that recovery costs massively exceed domestic resources and that waiting for the fund's scheduled board meeting in December would be too late. Representatives from Nepal's Ministry of Forests and Environment and the UN fund have not immediately responded to requests for comment. (Key numbers: 12)
