Corporate AI spending has surged 13-fold over the past year, leading to severe budget overruns, with Uber depleting its annual AI budget in just four months and one firm spending $500 million on tokens in a single month. While the median corporate client pays just $11 per employee monthly for AI, the top 1% of spenders rack up average bills of $7,450 per person.

To combat spiraling costs, companies are ending employee incentives to maximize token usage and are adopting more cost-effective model selections. For example, using lagging-edge or open-source models can reduce costs to one-twentieth or even one-four-hundredth of a leading-edge model's price.

Firms are also implementing strict spending caps, such as Uber's monthly limit of $1,500 per coding tool per employee. Although software vendors and cloud providers are launching budget-management services, potential price increases from model-makers following their expected public listings may further inflate corporate bills.
