Seven years after being written off due to the May 2019 US export controls, Huawei is making technical advances using backup chips prepared over a decade. Led by the 56-year-old head of HiSilicon, He Tingbo, Huawei is utilizing logic-stacking technology to bypass lithography constraints and surpass the assumed 7-nanometer (7nm) limit of China's semiconductor capabilities. This approach folds circuits into multiple layers to boost computing performance. While smartphone chips utilizing this technology are planned for launch later this year, significant engineering challenges remain, and the technology will not be ready for AI processors in data centers until 2030.
To compensate for weaker individual chips, Huawei is building massive computing clusters. Despite these supply shortages, Huawei has begun marketing integrated systems combining its 950DT chips with DeepSeek’s V4 model to clients in the Middle East and Central Asia. This commercialization effort presents a direct challenge to US technological dominance. Inspired by the 2,000-year-old Dujiangyan irrigation system, Huawei's resilience has convinced global investors and policymakers that Chinese semiconductor self-sufficiency is an attainable goal.
