Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's former defense minister, has called for presidential elections to be held during wartime. While many of his arguments, such as the need for democratic accountability and that Russia should not dictate Ukraine's election timeline, seem reasonable, Bloomberg columnist Marc Champion considers this demand reckless and wrong.

Champion highlights the insurmountable obstacles to holding elections during a war, particularly the inability to ensure voter safety amid ongoing Russian bombardments. Furthermore, rather than defying Russia, an election might play exactly into Putin's hands by causing political polarization and destabilizing the country.

Ukraine should currently focus on preparing for the approaching harsh winter and addressing its lack of missile defense systems, instead of organizing an election. Although Zelenskyy made a mistake by firing Fedorov and both should set aside their political interests, waiting for a ceasefire before holding elections is the only sensible choice.
