Google said it is still committed to its 24/7 carbon-free energy target for 2030, even as the rapid expansion of AI data centers raises doubts about whether hourly clean-power matching is realistic. Ben King, Google’s country managing director for Singapore and Malaysia, said at a conference in Singapore that the company’s hourly matching goal remains in place, meaning every hour of electricity use should be backed by clean energy in every region where it operates.

The debate has intensified after reports that Microsoft may back away from its own 2030 hourly matching target, a move that would have major emissions consequences. A recent study cited in the article says matching consumption with clean power in the same hour on the same grid can cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 42 times more than annual matching. Google was the first major company to pledge 24/7 clean power, discussing the idea as early as 2018, but it has also called the effort a moonshot and said it is far more complex and technically challenging than annual targets.

Google’s latest sustainability report says it used carbon-free energy about two-thirds of the time on average, while some regions exceeded 90% clean-power use for offices and data centers. The company’s stance contrasts with broader industry pushback: more than 60 companies, including Amazon and Apple, recently urged the Greenhouse Gas Protocol not to require hourly matching. The implication is that the sector is split between ambitious 2030 clean-energy claims and the practical limits created by AI-driven power demand, with Google still publicly holding to the stricter standard despite the operational challenge.
