Amazon.com Inc. has blocked Meta Platforms Inc.'s new artificial intelligence agent, Muse, from accessing its retail site after the social media company declined a request to remove the bot. An Amazon spokesperson stated that company policy strictly prohibits third-party automated tools from shopping on its platform, prompting Amazon to deploy blocking measures that display pop-up warnings alerting users to terms of service violations.

While developing its own automated shopping solutions, Amazon has actively worked to prevent rival bots from browsing its product catalog and making purchases. The company previously filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI Inc. over similar concerns, marking a high-profile legal dispute that could define future rules for agentic commerce. Although most consumers currently utilize AI agents for research rather than direct transactions, the shift toward autonomous purchasing poses a long-term risk to Amazon's retail traffic and ad sales.

Amazon Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy noted earlier this year that the agentic shopping experience still has significant shortcomings, with bots frequently mishandling pricing and other critical data. Despite ongoing discussions with developers to improve accuracy and build mutually agreeable standards, Amazon maintains that third-party purchasing agents must operate transparently and strictly respect platform opt-in decisions.
