Federal investigators used intercepted bark shipments to identify and surveil him, leading to a home search warrant by June 2022 and arrest. Prosecutors initially treated ~300 kg of bark as “unprocessed DMT,” implying up to 40 years, but DEA testing found <1% DMT, shrinking the controlled-substance weight to ~3 kg. With Colorado’s 2022 psychedelic decriminalization shifting the broader climate, he ultimately received 24 months in February 2023 (with ~1/3 already served) and was released about 8 months later on probation; by the May 22, 2025 publication date, he reported his fortune largely spent or seized.
