亞馬遜已向美國聯邦通信委員會（FCC）申請許可，計畫發射 5,000 顆衛星建立直連裝置網路，從太空為手機提供行動服務。這項低軌道衛星網路將在沒有基地台覆蓋的地區提供全球性的簡訊、數據和緊急救援服務。

此舉是亞馬遜為了加強與 SpaceX 的競爭，並緊接在該公司宣布斥資 116 億美元收購衛星公司 Globalstar 之後，這筆交易賦予了亞馬遜向手機傳輸數據的頻譜權利。亞馬遜也將延續與 Vodafone 和 DirecTV 等傳統電信商的合作模式。

此外，亞馬遜目前正在建置另一個名為 Amazon Leo 的獨立網路系統，主要用於寬頻網路傳輸，並已與蘋果公司達成協議，為 iPhone 和 Apple Watch 提供衛星服務。直連裝置網路則預計於 2028 年開始部署。

Amazon has requested permission from the US Federal Communications Commission to launch a direct-to-device network of 5,000 satellites to provide mobile services to cell phones from space. This low-Earth orbit network will offer global coverage for messaging, data, and emergency services in areas without cell tower reception.

This move intensifies Amazon's competition with SpaceX and follows its $11.6 billion acquisition of the satellite company Globalstar, which grants spectrum rights for beaming data to phones. Amazon will also continue to partner with traditional telecommunications companies like Vodafone and DirecTV.

Separately, Amazon is building another network called Amazon Leo to beam broadband internet to Earth receivers and has partnered with Apple to provide satellite services for iPhones and Apple Watches. The new direct-to-device network is expected to begin deployment in 2028.
